New year, new start! I used to never set New Year’s resolutions because I could never follow through until I started being more intentional. Set yourself up for success with these four ways to keep your New Year’s resolutions.

1. Be Specific

It’s important to know exactly where you are headed so it’s clear when you have arrived. For example, the resolution “be more organized” is broad and impossible to gauge success. An obtainable resolution is specific, such as: “organize three closets and maintain the order for three months.”

2. Break the Resolution into Steps

Stating the resolution isn’t powerful enough to get you motivated. Resolutions need a step-by-step plan of action on how to work toward the goal. Write out a plan with the steps it takes to march you forward.

3. Be Realistic and Intentional

Don’t take on more than you can manage. Set resolutions that are attainable and enticing. James Clear, author of Atomic Habits, explains the best way to enlist new habits that last is to: make it obvious, make it attractive, make it easy, and make it satisfying. Be intentional so you can be successful.

4. Build in Accountability

It’s challenging to reach a goal with no support. People provide motivation and encouragement. Enlist a friend, spouse, co-worker, or professional to help you achieve success. (The Proper Place can help!)

Change will not come by waiting, but by action. Adapting human behavior isn’t easy, but worth it. If you fall behind, be intentional to reset and keep at it one day at a time.
