Because that’s how my mom did it.

Just because your mom did it that way, doesn't mean it's the best way for you. Our habits are often formed based on how we were raised. We are either embracing the habits, intentionally trying to do things differently, or lost (and frustrated) in the shuffle. Which are you?

Just because your mom did it that way, doesn’t mean it’s the best way for you. Our habits are often formed based on how we were raised. We are either embracing the habits, intentionally trying to do things differently, or lost (and frustrated) in the shuffle. Which are you?

As an adult, we are making current choices based on past experiences — both positive and negative.

Why do you cook potatoes that way? Because that’s how my mom always did it. Why do you pay bills like that? Because that’s how my mom always did it. Why are you intent on keeping the counter cleared? Because my mom never did. Why do you get up early? Because my mom always did.

Oftentimes it’s not until we stop and consider why we do it that way, that we realize we are living in reaction to our upbringing. We were being molded into a woman who would battle habits outside our perceived control before we were even school-age!

Do you model your actions based on how your parents ran their schedules and lives? Or are you intentionally doing it differently?

Where do you land in these two scenarios?

1. You DO it the same way it was modeled and...

A. It works well for you!
You are managing life in stride and have systems that work.
B. You can’t figure out why you’re losing things, missing deadlines, living in chaos.
It was the right way for your mom, but you need a different way that will work with your strengths.

2. You DON'T like how it was modeled and...

A. You intentionally are doing it different to change the generational habits.
It motivates you to find better methods, and you’ve found solutions and systems that work well for you.
B. You’re frustrated because you can’t find a different way so you fall into poor habits.
Don’t give up. It’s possible to change with new methods and systems that will work for your way of life.

Whether you’re the woman who is changing the pattern or doing it the same because that works for you, your efforts are worth it! And if you’re feeling lost in between, I’d love to help you find a system that works. Reach out today.

We have some pretty amazing women and moms in our lives, but no matter your circumstances, know: there is no one way to cook a potato, no right time to get up in the morning, and no perfect woman.

Strive to be the best version of you and offer yourself (and your mom) a little grace this Mother’s Day.
