Are you a control freak or do you delegate? One of the key elements of productivity is delegation, and if you’re not utilizing it, you are missing out!

Believe it or not, knowing how to delegate properly is a skill that few have perfected. We tend to think we need to do it all ourselves otherwise it won’t get done well. Or we fall victim to the idea that there’s no one willing to help. Unknowingly you are believing falsities about delegating and limiting your productivity skills!

Let’s break down the misconceptions and find ways to delegate that will work for you.

It’s easier if I do it myself.

I like the control pants and think I need to be the one to do tasks so they get done “right.” I’ve learned I’m totally missing out on someone else’s great perspective by trying to do it all. Plus, I get burnt out easily. Let’s not play the victim card of “I have to do it all” and build the skill of delegation. Put people on your team to help!

They don’t do it right.

There may be more than one right way to file papers or unload the dishwasher, right? Or did you consider there was a communication breakdown? Be open-minded to troubleshooting and communicate clearly. You don’t have to give up all control, still offer oversight and clear expectations.

No one else can do it.

Is that really true? Are you the only person who can fold laundry or create marketing materials? Taking time to train someone to do a task can help not only you but the entire business/household. We need to delegate for productivity, but also for backup when we are laid up or out of town.

It’s not worth the effort.

Communication and delegation go hand-in-hand, as well as understanding the skillset of others. There will be a learning curve when you delegate, but if the person has the ability, empower them to take the reins. The training will be worth the effort in the long run.

I have no one to delegate to.

False. Even if you work or live alone, there are still people and resources you can utilize. Accountants, coaches, assistants, friends, neighbors, technology. Build a support system to help you use your energy in the most efficient places.

By not delegating, you are limiting yourself! Be open to other options…and you just might get more accomplished!

If you love to read and learn, my favorite book about productivity is The Productivity Chain, by Casey Moore, CPO.
